High performance fibers refer to chemical fibers with special physical and chemical structures, properties, and applications, or with special functions. They generally have extremely high tensile strength and Young's modulus, as well as other characteristics such as high temperature resistance, radiation resistance, flame resistance, high pressure resistance, acid resistance, alkali resistance, and resistance to oxidant corrosion. They are widely used in fields such as aerospace, national defense and military industry, transportation, industrial engineering, geotechnical engineering, and even the biopharmaceutical and electronic industries.
High performance fibers are an important component of the new materials industry and a key material for the development of China's chemical fiber industry. Their development level is related to national economic development and strategic security. After decades of development, with the joint efforts of the government, enterprises, research institutes, and industry associations, China's high-performance fiber industry has made great efforts to tackle key technologies, expand downstream applications, and comprehensively promote industrial scale, technological progress, and system construction. This has significantly shortened the level gap with developed countries in the past 30 years, achieving breakthrough progress and significant achievements. At present, domestic carbon fiber production capacity accounts for about 28% of the global total production capacity, aramid fiber accounts for about 23%, and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber accounts for about 66%. Overall, China's high-performance fibers have become the country with the widest product coverage and application range in the world. The production scale of carbon fibers, aramid fibers, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fibers, and basalt fibers ranks among the top three in the world. The mainstream product technology, output, and quality have reached the world's advanced level. The rapid development of domestically produced high-performance fibers has injected new impetus into the core competitiveness of China's manufacturing industry, making significant contributions to the high-quality development of aviation and aerospace, national defense and military industry, wind power generation, civil engineering and construction, automotive lightweighting, ocean engineering and other fields.
