Insulation materials in motors

May 23, 2023

The main application scenarios of insulation materials are in electrical and motor equipment. What are the specific ones?

1. Insulation material: a material that can prevent the passage of current, with a volume resistivity usually greater than 109 Ω. cm

2. The function of insulating materials: to isolate the charged and uncharged parts or parts with different potentials from each other, so that current can flow along a certain path.

3. Motor: Electromagnetic mechanical equipment for energy conversion

4. Motor classification: transformer, DC motor, AC motor, control motor, pulse current motor

5. The basic structure of the motor:

Static part (stator): generates a magnetic field, forms a magnetic circuit, and is mechanically supported.

Gap (air gap): An important component of the magnetic circuit to ensure the safe operation of the motor

Rotating part (rotor): Inductive electromotive force, generates electromagnetic torque, and achieves energy conversion.

The structure of the stator: frame, main magnetic pole, commutator pole, end cover, and brush device.

The structure of the rotor: shaft, armature iron core, armature winding, and commutator.

6. Armature winding: It is composed of a certain number of armature coils connected according to a certain rule; It is the circuit part of a DC motor and also the part that induces electromotive force to generate electromagnetic torque for electromechanical energy conversion

7. The main materials used in the manufacturing of motors include conductive materials (windings, commutators, brushes), insulation materials (separating the live parts from grounding components such as the iron core and base, as well as electrically charged parts with different potentials), and magnetic conductive materials (manufacturing various components of the magnetic system such as the iron core and base).

8. Motor insulation structure: inter turn insulation, interlayer insulation, ground insulation, and external insulation. There are three more, including filling insulation, lining insulation, and commutator insulation.

Turn to turn insulation: the turn to turn insulation of the main pole coil and the commutation pole coil, the turn to turn insulation of the armature coil, the commutation piece, the inter turn insulation, and the insulation between various wire turns of the same coil

layer insulation; The insulation between the layers of the main pole coil, the insulation between the front and rear end sections of the armature winding, the insulation between the upper and lower layers of the slot, and the insulation between the upper and lower layers of the coil are obtained through layered flat winding

Ground insulation: refers to the insulation between each winding of the motor and the base and other non charged parts, the ground insulation of the main pole coil commutation pole coil, the ground insulation of the armature winding, and the ground insulation of the commutator, which isolates the live parts of the motor from the base, iron core, and other non charged parts to prevent ground breakdown.

External insulation: The insulation wrapped around the ground insulation mainly protects the ground insulation from mechanical damage and makes the entire coil sturdy and flat, also playing a reinforcing role in the ground insulation

Filling insulation: Fill the gaps in the coil to firmly form a whole, reduce vibration, and make the coil shape regular and flat, which is conducive to wrapping ground insulation and heat dissipation

Pad insulation: protects the insulation structure from mechanical damage during process operations

Commutator insulation: insulation between commutator plates, insulation between commutator plate group and ground, V-shaped mica ring and mica sleeve between commutator plate group and pressure ring, multi-layer high-quality shellac plastic mica

9. Insulation of stator bar conductor: inter row insulation, transposition insulation, transposition filling.

10. Hydrogenerator rotor insulation: inter turn insulation, magnetic pole support plate, and pole body insulation.
